Morning Session: Skid pad, braking, classroom
Page 1 | Page 2

Matthew attended the 1-day Skip Barber Driving School program held at the Laguna Seca race
track, near Monterey, CA. The day started at 8 am with check-in; at 8:30 am the morning
session began. The students were divided into 3 teams: A, B, and C. Matthew was on Team A.
Team A went first to the Skid Pad, where they drove a Dodge truck over water-slicked pavement
around a cone-defined loop. They learned how to perform CPR to control a skid: Correct, Pause, Recover.
The next exercise was on braking: straight and while in a turn. After this, they went to the classroom
for a lecture on the physics of the forces they just experienced on the track. The morning session
ended around 11:30. Lunch lasted until noon.

Side note: All the vehicles except for one replacement Neon had manual transmissions. Robert taught
Matthew how to drive a stick shift. Matthew had only been out 5 or 6 times, but he had no trouble
driving the manual shift cars at Skip Barber's.
